Search engines are aimed at helping Internet users find exactly what they want. Search engines put together a database of websites by sending "spiders" or "robots" that go from link to link. When they get to a website, they index most of the words available. When you use a search engine, the engine scans its data bank of websites to match your keywords to those same keywords in pages in the database. How to make the search more effective? - Be specific The more specific you are, the more information you'll find. Type in the search field exactly what you're searching for. For example, if you're searching for science experiments, enter School Science Fair Projects instead of science projects. If you know it's a physics experiment, add the word 'physics' to your search. - The + symbol Enter the most significant words in your search first. To make certain the search engine finds pages containing all the words you're looking for, use the + symbol in front of each word. For example, if you're looking for info on Beyonce and Jay-Z, then enter +Beyonce +Jay-Z. Only pages containing both words will be found. - The - symbol If you're searching for something specific but don't want tons of other info that's not related to your subject, use the - symbol. For example, if you're seeking info on Michael Phelps but don't want to read about his sports achievements, enter Michael Phelps -Pro -Swimmer. - Using a "phrase search" When search words are put in quotation marks, it's called a "phrase search." The engine will show pages that have the terms in the exact order as in quotation marks. Fir instance, if you're searching specifically for a bio on Linda Evangelista, enter "Linda Evangelista Biography". - Booleans Boolean operators can be used in most major search engines when they allow some kind of advanced searching. The most popular booleans are AND, OR and NOT. Boolean operators are a lot like the + and - symbols. AND means "include all of the words," OR means "include any of the words" and NOT means "exclude." For example, if you're seeking information on music and dancing enter music AND dancing. Only pages containing both words will be on the list.
