MUSIC is an art form which reflects social and cultural processes. If the society or the culture of a certain area is falling in to decline, the music of that place will reflect it. Similarly, when the society or the culture is thriving, the music will also flourish. Thus, music has a major persona in the tracing the past of a country. Contemporary music owes much to the Ancient Greeks. In fact, the term "music" is derived from the 9 muses of Ancient Greece, who were goddesses ruling over the arts and sciences. Contemporary musicians refer to their muse, which is somebody who impacts on another person's creative work. A number of musical terms originated from the Greek language. However, with the fall of Ancient Greece and the collapse of the Roman and Byzantine Empires, Greek music stopped its development for several centuries until it was reborn in the Nineteenth century. Greeks are believed to have considered music a way of exalting the glory of god. Music was also a part of their social life. It was played on all kinds of social occasions. Because drama was also quite popular in Greece, music was used when drama was staged. Greek music is commonly said to have lacked harmony. It was generally sung by one vocalist and not by a choir as is ordinarily seen in Greek plays. In Ancient Greece the laws of music were followed very stringently, and one form was not permitted to mix with another. The rules were so stringent that the audience or listeners were not allowed to applaud. The aim of musical shows was not to amuse but to teach common people. Pythagoras was the first to launch the use of numbers to mark musical scales which he discovered when studying the differences in sound frequencies of varied length strings of a musical instrument. The concept was introduced to Ancient Greek Music. Therefore, Pythagoras became known as the father of music theory. Most musical works were monophonic. Hence, they were quire similar. But when musicians started experimenting, Plato called it sacrilege of the purest form of music. These days Greek music includes traditional folk music and Eastern and Western tendencies.
