An eating disorder is an illness which adversely affects all facets of each sufferer's life, is brought on by various emotional factors and influences. In this article we will concenatrate upon Anorexia and Bulimia. Eating disorder sufferers have a low self-esteem and frequently an intense need to gain stringent control over their surroundings and emotions. Anorexia is a unique response to a variety of external and internal conflicts, such as strain, anxiety, unhappiness and feeling as if life is uncontrolled. A person suffering from Anorexia may be abnormally sensitive about being perceived as overweight, or have a deep fear of becoming overweight - although not all Anorexia sufferers experience this fear. They may fear to lose control over the amount of food they consume, coupled with the desire to have stringent control of their emotions and responses to their emotions. This makes them turn to obsessive dieting and starvation as a means to control not only their weight, but their feelings and actions. Some also believe that they do not merit the simple pleasures of life, and will deprive themselves of situations offering pleasure, including eating. Some of the behavioral signs can be: calorie and fat gram counting, starvation and limitation of food, obsessive exercise, self-induced vomiting, the use of weight loss solutions, diuretics or laxatives to to control weight, and a persistent concern over the body image. Men and women with Bulimia seek episodes of binging and purging - they cannot stop themselves from eating too much and then vomit to control their weight - because they feel overwhelmed in dealing with their emotions, or to punish themselves. Those having Bulimia may seek binge and purge episodes to avoid and let out feelings of stress, anger, concern or depression. Recurring episodes of binging followed by tremendous guilt and purging (laxatives or self-induced vomiting), a feeling of losing control over eating behaviors, engaging in stringent dieting and physical exercise on a regular basis, the misuse of diuretics or laxatives, and/or diet pills and a persistent concern over the way they look can all be warning signs of Bulimia. The two illnesses have a lot of similarities, the most common being the cause. They are complex emotional issues. Though they may seem to be nothing more than a dangerously obsessive body weight concern on the surface, for most sufferers there are more profound emotional conflicts to be handled. |
