There are a lot of online websites that offer music downloads. Some sites charge per digital music download, while other websites offer to pay a monthly fee for an unlimited number of downloads. It has been researched that CD sales are declining (19% in the last few years), and digital music download sales are speedily going up. Revenues from digital music sales are reported to have raised almost threefold last year, with Apple's iTunes accounting for over 85% of single soundtrack downloads. However, this does not mean that Apple is the only source of online music downloads. At present, lawful music download sites account for about 6% of record companies' revenues, which is a boost compared to the situation a couple of years ago. There are two kinds of music download sites: 'rent' and 'buy' sites. 'Rent' websites are music websites involving a monthly fee paid to obtain access to all the music in the database. 'Buy' services charge per track - iTunes, for example - where a track can be burned onto a CD provided it is paid for. Then the CD can be ripped to the computer. Some online music services require a monthly fee for limitless listening rights, but also charge to buy a song. Most digital music download sites use the Windows Media Audio (WMA) format. ITunes uses the AAC format. It is important to distinguish the two, since Apple iPods cannot play WMA files, and non-iPod devices cannot play the iTunes AAC format. Finding a site to download music from can greatly depend upon this simple difference. Some online music download services charge 9 cents per song. Also, these services have tracks that can be downloaded in any common audio format and quality. Sometimes music download sites are so cheap and easy to use that many Internet users prefer to download music from these sites instead of ripping CD collections onto the computer. For any Internet user downloading soundtracks onto an iPod or iTunes, it is probably the optimal option. For any music not being downloaded onto an iPod, any other source of music will suit. When seeking the optimum quality music downloads, one should look for music download sites with the largest selection of music that is regularly updated, and excellent quality downloads. Normally, the price is directly dependent on quality. In this case, a question arises: Is it worth spending a few extra cents? The answer is positive. |
